Beyond the Pixel: The Importance of Tangible Art in Landscape Photography

In an age defined by endless scrolling, photographs are often consumed in fleeting moments, glimpsed, liked, and forgotten within seconds. While digital platforms have democratized photography and expanded its reach, they have also changed how we experience images: fast, transient, and often detached. This talk invites audiences to slow down and reconsider what it means to truly see a photograph.

In Beyond the Pixel, landscape and nature photographer Jack Lodge explores the enduring power of the printed image. Moving beyond the screen, he examines how print transforms a photograph from a disposable visual into a physical object, one that carries presence, intention, and permanence. A print asks more of the viewer: time, attention, and emotional engagement.

Drawing from his own practice, Lodge reflects on how the process of printing reshapes the photographer’s relationship with their work. Decisions around paper, scale, texture, and tonal depth become integral to the final image, turning photography into a fully realized artistic craft. Printing is not simply an output, it is a continuation of the creative process.

The talk also considers the role of tangible photographs in an increasingly digital culture. What does it mean for an image to exist physically in a space? How does scale influence perception? Why do printed works often evoke a deeper emotional response than their digital counterparts?

Through visual examples and personal insights, Lodge argues that print is not a nostalgic return to the past, but a vital, forward looking practice, one that ensures photographic work endures beyond the digital moment.

Attendees will leave with a renewed appreciation for the materiality of photography, and a deeper understanding of how bringing images into the physical world can elevate both artistic intent and viewer connection.
